Where We've Been...

I haven't blogged for over a week now...here's why...
Last Monday, the week before Labor Day, we decided to put Emma to bed on her own. We let her cry for 15 minutes and then went and held her for 5 and then laid her back down for another 15, and so on. Well, by the end of the second 15 minutes we had created ourselves a little situation. Emma didn't sleep until Thursday night, so from Monday at noon until Thursday night at about 11, our little monster was awake. She was beyond tired and fighting to stay awake the whole time. After two visits to the pediatrician, we learned that we had created a fear in her, a separation anxiety. She was so afraid of being left alone that she wouldn't let herself fall asleep or if she began to dose off she would wake herself up and cry. I had to be holding her the entire time or it was serious screaming.
Needless to say, I was exhausted, she was exhausted and Todd was in his last week of intense qualifications for work. On Thursday I did some research online and went to the public library where I checked out the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp. This was the turning point. Dr. Karp suggests 5 steps for helping babies, especially colicky babies calm down and sleep. That night she slept for 9 hours straight. Now, she hasn't slept like that since then, but she is sleeping for 4-6 hours at a time at night now. She has slept in a swing since Thursday with white noise playing directly under her and she has been swaddled so tight she looks like a mummy. She still won't sleep at all during the day, there's something about being busy and her not wanting to miss anything, but her night time sleeping is definitly getting better!
So...here we are, she is 2 1/2 months old, still cries a lot, not totally sleeping on her own, but we couldn't love her more. She is so happy during the day and it makes those hard times so much more worth it! She weighs just over 12lbs now and is doing well!

Also get the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, healthy child." My kids are all three the best sleepers, and I know it can't be all coincidence! She is darling, and this will be so funny when you look BACK on it!

Wow...how did we ever raise 4 children without all these reference books...pure luck I suppose.

I got that book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child" too. I owe all my long restful nights and good long daytime naps to that book. Good Luck!
